Our emergency building permit for 113 was granted this month for joist replacement. We are so grateful to Ken Popham, architect, for all of his design work and for personally delivering the application to Hamilton County offices to get us in their queue. Upon granting of the permit we ordered the wood for the project and had it delivered. And then a volunteer crew (pictured below) showed up and moved all of the wood from the street into the building.
One of Lockland’s own helped purchase the wood by donating $500 towards the cost which has supplied us with 70 2x4x10 studs. We are now awaiting the availability of our construction manager to begin the joist replacement work!
We often take time to consider how many people have contributed their time, muscles, skills, knowledge and finances towards Making a Home for the Metanoia Center. The above is one such example where many hands have made this next step possible! We are so grateful!
On November 17th a crew of volunteers arrived to help move debris from the recent flower cooler demo into an awaiting Village truck. The flower cooler was demoed by Jeff Van Fossen, and his father Jim, over two different work days. They went through several sawzall blades in accomplishing this task! As a result of the demo and work of the volunteers who carried it all to the truck, we now have additional room in the front of the building, (pictured below is the debris pile)!
During November we continued working in 115 to make it “safe, warm and dry” for use by groups. As of this newsletter the building is being used once weekly by a men’s bible study/prayer group, and we are making plans for the after school groups and ESL group to also use the building. We have replaced exit doors, added emergency lighting, added exit lights, replaced gas lines and water lines, enabled the furnace, added hot water, made the restroom functional, added social distancing markers and more.
Replace the Roof On 115
We’ve also received $22,010 in donations towards replacing the roof on this building – Praise God. The roofer has been contacted and he’s getting us scheduled to begin the work weather permitting. Pray with us for dry days, at least 7 in a row, which is how long the roofer estimates it will take them to do the work.
A Gift of Bibles
Thank you to Lockland’s own Hosanna Revival for a gift of 50 Bibles! If you’re in the market for a new Bible, journal, calendar and more please be sure to check them out by going to their website at https://hosannarevival.com/.
Preston Charles Funeral Home, just down the street from the Center, gifted us with a case (50 rolls) of toilet tissue to pass out to the neighborhood. This was followed by a gift of hundreds of rolls of toilet paper, paper towels, and canned goods by the children’s ministry at Faith Bible Church. We also received a $100 gift card from one of our volunteers to purchase additional materials for the neighborhood.
One Friday, this month of November, we were able to get the word out to the neighborhood that these were available. We had a steady stream of people coming to pick up these goods. This gave us opportunity to talk to them about how they’re handling life, about the purpose of the Metanoia Center, and God’s goodness in providing these items for them. All of these items where gone in just a few hours. This provided us with a great opportunity to interact with our neighbors and hear from them. We heard comments from “No one cares about this neighborhood.” to “Thank you for helping us – things are really hard especially because of COVID.”.
Planning for Winter Months
Last Work Day of 2020
Calling all painters! The last work day of 2020 is planned for December 5 at 9:30 am. We are needing 15 volunteers to join us sealing cinder block walls mostly in 113. We do have similar work for 115, for example, painting the bathroom, painting the back door, sealing walls. This is predominantly a “painting work day”. Go here to register.
We have some other small projects listed on the website that we will keep pressing forward. We are mostly waiting to complete the joist replacement in 113 so that we can finish the demo work upstairs and then move towards rehab. We’ll keep you posted as needs and opportunities become available.
Update on Jim
On Thursday, 11/19, Jim woke up with numbness in his left face, along with what he called “wonkiness” with his left arm and left leg. We headed off to the ER. After blood tests, a CT scan with and without contrast, the prognosis was “pinched nerves as a result of inflammation caused by stress and anxiety” along with pretty high blood pressure.
The next day, we met with Jim’s primary care doctor, based on the ER findings, prescribed some meds for the blood pressure and then ordered a MRI. We were able to get the MRI done and read the next Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. The MRI revealed a small area on the right side of the brain that indicated a mild stroke most likely caused by high blood pressure.
As of this newsletter Jim is continuing with the medication, and working on weight loss and stress management. The timeliness of reducing Jim’s work load by stepping down from the Global CHE Network (on 11/19/2020), and merging LongviewNET, our website tent-making work with Digital BG will provide considerable help in reducing Jim’s stress load. We want to thank everyone for praying and for your concern, and ask that you keep on praying. The Body of Christ is amazing!!!
- Pray for 7 dry days in a row to help get the roof replaced on 115!
- Pray for Jim’s health in light of his recent mild stroke.
