The Mural @ the Metanoia Center is Finished!

The mural at the Metanoia Center, on the north wall of 115 N. Wayne, was completed on September 30, 2022.   However, it began several years earlier when we began talking and exploring the idea.

The mural gained significant traction when Mark Lopez shared a photo of a mural that was taken in Bloomington, IN at the end of 2021.   A team of volunteers that included Sommer Ray and Ella Hamm began chatting and thinking about elements to include.   Sommer took the design elements and created the very first concept that would become today’s mural.

In the early summer of 2022, the Metanoia Center engaged Caleb Smith, a professional graphic designer, to finalize the concept created by Sommer.   In September of 2022 we contracted with Matt Cover, of Cover Designs, to paint the final design on the wall, the canvas, of 115 N. Wayne Ave.

The design includes elements from the life of the Village of Lockland, such as the clock, the panther, and metro bus number 78.  And the story of Lockland is not complete without the presence of a train since the Village is bound on the east and the west by active train tracks.  Thus, the night light on the building is the headlight of a train with the mural.  The train’s headlight lights up #LoveLockland at night time, thus giving it prominence 24 hours a day.   The mural is about a message of hope and life for the Village of Lockland.

ESL Renamed to ELC

We are beginning to rename the English as a Second Language Classes to simply, English Language Classes!   Why?!   Most students who take the classes at the Metanoia Center already speak multiple languages, some as many as five different languages.   Because of this there is a bit of disconnect with the titling of our class offerings as “Second” Language classes.   Becoming English Language Classes more accurately reflects the reality we are experiencing with our students!

Our ELC classes continue to grow.  We’re grateful for five new tutors joining us this fall.   The numbers of students continue to hold steady!  And, we have added a Monday 10am and a Tuesday 10am class time – including Sunday we now have three class opportunities.

Building Progress

Change in 113 continues to happen daily!   What a great place to be after long months of waiting on permits and funding!   The plumber shares they are almost ready to turn on the water to test the pipes!   Lots of framing is up – so much so that we just completed our third delivery of 2 x 4’s and 2 x 6’s.   The HVAC folks have primed the floor for their work.  And our general contractor informs us to expect the electrician to begin their work any day this week!   In addition, we’ve had a meeting with our architect, the general contractor and Phyllis and Jim to make sure we’re all in sync on the project.   We are so excited as we are seeing new life, transformation, breathed into our formerly old, damaged and leaking building!   As always, we are more than happy to meet with you, or anyone, on site to walk through and share the progress with you!   There is nothing like seeing it in person – plus you can check out the new mural in person too!

We are very confident we have sufficient funds to complete Phase 1 (the bottom floor)!  Thank you to everyone who has been a part of moving the funding to this point!   We’ve begun to do some initial planning for Phase 2 (the second floor) pending the completion of Phase 1 in order to create an estimate for that Phase for funds that would complete the renovation of 113 N. Wayne – Phase 1 and Phase 2.

COMING SOON!  One of the last steps in completing Phase 1 – the bottom floor – is to paint it.  In order to reduce the cost of the project we committed to volunteers doing the painting.    Keep an eye out … as we get closer we’ll do a quick email asking for help painting the walls and the trim.  Since this will be an inside project we’ll be wanting to find folks who can handle a roller and/or paint brush!  There will also be some ladder work (we have 10 foot ceilings!).

Work Area – eventual location of a sink, a fountain and a dishwasher along with lots of cabinets.
On the right, 1 of 2 bathrooms, on the left, janitors closet.

Tutoring Opportunity

Please reach out to Phyllis if you have interest in helping with tutoring 1st – 3rd graders.  We will be starting our tutoring program next Tuesday, October 11 for a select group of students that have been recommended by their teachers for intervention-type services to help with learning areas such as phonological awareness, reading, and writing.  This might also grow into a need for math help in the future depending on the needs of the students as well as the resources and tutors we have available.

Future Class Offering

One of the felt needs of our local community is that of Parenting Training.   We often interact with many single-parent households whose parent/guardian expresses a desire for help with parenting skills.   Phyllis and Jim, along with Judi and Terri (two of our board members) have been auditing a parenting course for the past three weeks.

In addition, we continue to review and consider other potential course materials.   We are fervently looking for a curriculum that matches the urban and Biblical mission of the Metanoia Center, and that also matches the needs and resources of those we serve.   It’s a challenging task!    Once we have selected the curriculum we’ll be formatting a way to bring others alongside of the Metanoia Center to facilitate the course.   This will, prayerfully in 2023, become another opportunity for you to partner with the Metanoia Center and participate in urban missions.
