ESL and After School

We are really excited about what has been happening with our ESL classes and after-school activity with the MC Club.

With ESL we are seeing gradual growing numbers of students.   We have been blessed with capable caring teachers and leadership.   And, we are making more and more connections into the communities where our students live.   We’ve had some discussions about expanding ESL to include a Monday morning group built around conversational topics such as government, how you came to live in Lockland, food, banking, jobs and more.   Continue to pray with us about this ministry effort, pray for our teachers and leaders who dedicate their personal time as volunteers!   Below are a couple of photos from recent classes.

MC Club meets weekly on Thursday at 3pm.   The Club has grown to 25 to 35 students weekly.   We are so blessed to have 8 to 10 weekly volunteers leading the Club.   Keith Ray leads this team of volunteers who are having a significant impact on the students of Lockland.   They’re building close relationships with those who attend.   We are so blessed to have this group using our facilities!   Discussions are underway to expand to an additional day of meeting during the week!  Pray for volunteers to support this effort.  From our view point, this group could meet 5 or 6 days of each week – there is certainly a need, and desire by the students, to have a place to hangout.   We’re very excited that the Gospel is shared each week! Below are two photos from a recent MC Club meeting.   You can see a larger version with greater detail by clicking on a photo!

2021 Work Day Wrap Up

We had several work teams join us in October bringing to a close Work Day events for 2021!   Wyoming Presbyterian Church, Wyoming, OH joined us for a work day on their Be the Church Sunday.  Cool Springs Baptist Church, from North Carolina, joined us for several days for work, prayer walks and participating with a Sunday ESL class.  Photos of each team are below!

Other Activity

With gratefulness, and funded by several donations, we’ve been able to hire a professional tree service to cut down trees that have been growing over the top of 113. Doing so will help to prevent future roof damage cause by falling tree debris.   One tree that is being trimmed back is a massive walnut tree on the property behind 113.   This fall, this tree has dropped a mass amount of walnuts.  Not only are the walnuts, leaves and branches a danger to the roof – but they also present a danger to walking or climbing stairs in the back of building.  We’ve also been able to have storm gutters installed on 113 and do some final roof repair and cleanup in order to get fully ready for winter.

Remaining on the exterior of 113 and 115 is some painting, however, due to the wet, cold changing weather it does seem most likely painting will wait till spring.

Soon we’ll be putting up insulation plastic in the back of 115 where the major cold drafts are.  This, along with the installation of a programmable, seven day thermostat will help to keep our heating expenses as low as possible and the building comfortable.   Generally, during the winter months, our utility costs double as compared to summer costs.

Building and Needs Update

Our focus, Phase I (as we call it), is to complete and occupy the bottom of 113 N. Wayne as the Metanoia Center.   Our estimated cost is $150,000 to do so.  Phase II is to complete and rent out the two apartments on the second floor of 113 N. Wayne (thus generating an operating income for the Metanoia Center to cover utilities and on going repairs).  Phase II also has an estimated cost of $150,000.

To do so we continue to seek God’s provision with finances to Make a Home for the Metanoia Center on two fronts:

  1. Donations (donate here) – we’re reaching out to area churches, businesses and individuals for their financial gifting.
  2. Grants – we have several grants in the pipeline that, if granted, will be of significant help in moving us forward on completing the bottom of 113 N. Wayne!

In addition to the above efforts we are also in need of computers!  We have plenty of monitors so our need is for two tower computers, Windows 11 compatible, minimum of 16gb of RAM.

Prayer List

  • Pray fervently for fruit from the impact of the MC Club and ESL classes!
  • Pray with us for donations and grants to Make a Home for the Metanoia Center.  We do feel a sense of urgency to “get into the building” due to the times that we are in and the needs of people we are meeting.
  • As we come into a traditional holiday season we are praying for tender hearts towards the message of Christ – please join us.
  • Praise God for Phyllis’ continued healing post-COVID.   She is doing great!
  • For the men’s Bible study and prayer group now meeting Thursday mornings at the Center at 7am (come join in!).   We are delighted that we can offer them a warm place to meet during the colder months.
